Meet the Family

Hi there! I’m Monica, the author and creator of Ethie and Co. I have a deep passion for food and the process of obtaining it. Both of which have taken over our lives! We strive to grow most of our own produce, make nearly everything from scratch, and as of January 2017 we have renounced store-bought meat (we really need to breed more animals)!
Meet my beloved husband, Morgan, my favorite person in the entire world. He is the pen building, fence installing, tree chopping, tiller pushing man of my dreams. Every crazy half-baked idea I come up with, he finds a way to make happen.

This is Marshall, my wonderful stepson. Getting to be a part of his life has enriched mine more than I ever dreamed was possible. I cannot take any credit for his upbringing, but I am certainly honored to watch him grow into an amazing young man. This fella is the yard maintainer (no small feat on twenty acres), firewood splitter, and our stand in during out-of-town trips. All while he’s still in high school, and works two jobs! He’s a go getter, just like his daddy.

How We Got Here

Two years ago, Morgan and I decided that it was time for me to leave my job as a bartender. I had so much of my identity wrapped up in my job, the quality of work I did, and how much I was able to bring to the table. But there was a voice from within asking, “Are you going to serve God, or are you going to serve money?” It was a question that I wrestled with for weeks. Did I want to give up my independence? Did I want to walk away from something that I seemingly thrived at? Was I ready to leave my comfort zone?

It took me a little while to adjust to real life and spare time — words that had become foreign to me as an adult. Morgan and I discussed my dreams and desires, those that were within reach and the ones that seemed SO out of touch with reality. Several things were thrown around, yet no decisions reached.

Enter Ethel Mae.

Ethie came to us in a very pivotal time. We were midway through a Whole30** (the single most eye-opening experience on our health) and had become acutely aware of the implications of poor diet. This transformed the way we wanted to raise our animals and quickly put us on the path of grass-fed. The more we learned, the more conviction we felt to raise real food.

As we gain more information, our diets and methods of husbandry consistently evolve. My hopes in starting Ethie and Co are to keep a record of this progression to reference back to, and possibly aid others in achieving similar goals.

Feel free to leave any comments or questions below or through the contact page. I am by no means an expert, but I am an open book.

**Morgan and I both HIGHLY recommend setting aside 30 days to learn your body. It will change your life, and your insides will thank you.
